Embracing Your Shadows: Finding Healing in the Parts of Yourself You Hide 🌑✨

Embracing Your Shadows: Finding Healing in the Parts of Yourself You Hide 🌑✨

There are parts of ourselves we naturally find easier to love - our kindness, strength, creativity and compassion. But there are also parts we may hide away. The fears, insecurities, jealousy, anger, grief, old wounds and patterns we would rather not look at. 🌑

These are often referred to as our shadows.

Our shadow is not something bad or something we need to get rid of. It is simply made up of the parts of ourselves we have pushed away, hidden or learned not to express. Sometimes this happens because of experiences we have been through. Sometimes we were taught that certain emotions were unacceptable. And sometimes we created ways of protecting ourselves that we no longer need.

Embracing your shadows is about becoming curious about these hidden parts of yourself rather than judging them. 🤍

When something triggers us, when the same patterns keep appearing, or when we react more strongly than we expected, there can be something underneath asking to be understood.

Instead of asking, “What is wrong with me?”, shadow work invites us to ask:

“What is this part of me trying to show me?”

The purpose is not to live in the darkness. It is to bring awareness into it. Because when we begin to understand ourselves more deeply, we can start making conscious choices rather than allowing old wounds and patterns to make those choices for us. 🌙

💎 Crystals for Embracing Your Shadows

🌑 Obsidian: deep reflection and uncovering what may be hidden beneath the surface

🌸 Rhodonite: compassion, forgiveness and tending to emotional wounds

💜 Amethyst: calm and clarity when exploring difficult thoughts and emotions

🖤 Smoky Quartz: grounding when shadow work feels emotionally heavy

🌙 Labradorite: transformation, self-discovery and trusting yourself through change

🌿 Malachite: recognising patterns and encouraging personal transformation

🖤 Black Moonstone: exploring your inner world and emotions while moving through change

🤍 Rose Quartz: bringing softness, compassion and self-love into the process

You might choose one crystal to help you explore what is coming to the surface and another to represent the love and compassion you want to offer yourself while doing so.

A Simple Shadow Work Practice 🌑✨

Find somewhere quiet where you feel comfortable and safe. Place your chosen crystals beside you and, if you like, light a candle.

Take a few slow breaths.

Think about something that has recently triggered a strong emotional response in you. Perhaps something made you angry, defensive, jealous, fearful, rejected or not good enough.

Rather than judging the emotion, simply notice it.

Ask yourself:

“What is this feeling trying to show me?”

Allow whatever comes up to be there without immediately trying to fix it.

You may discover that underneath anger is hurt. Beneath jealousy may be insecurity. Beneath the need for control may be fear. Beneath pushing people away may be a fear of being abandoned.

Our reactions often have roots.

Set your intention:

“I am willing to meet the parts of myself I have hidden away. I choose curiosity over judgement and compassion over shame. I honour everything that has shaped me while allowing myself to grow beyond the patterns I no longer need.” 🤍

🌙 Take a Few Moments to Write Down:

  • What emotions do I find most difficult to accept in myself?

  • What situations trigger a stronger reaction in me than I would expect?

  • What might be underneath that reaction?

  • Is there a part of myself I have been avoiding or rejecting?

  • When did I first learn that this part of me needed to be hidden?

  • What might this part of me actually need?

  • How could I respond to myself with more compassion?

Shadow work is not about digging endlessly into everything that has ever hurt you. Nor is it about blaming yourself for your reactions.

It is about awareness.

Sometimes simply recognising “This reaction belongs to an old wound” can create enough space for you to choose differently.

And this is why embracing our shadows can become such an important part of a spiritual awakening. Awakening is not only about discovering the light within ourselves. Sometimes it asks us to walk into the places we have avoided and gently bring that light with us. 🕯️

The parts of you hidden in the shadows are still parts of you.

They deserve understanding.

They deserve compassion.

And sometimes, the very parts of ourselves we have tried hardest to hide are the ones holding the greatest opportunities for healing, wisdom and growth.

You do not need to fear your shadows. Meet them gently, listen to what they have been trying to tell you, and allow them to become part of the deeper understanding of who you are becoming. 🌑🌙✨
